Gold-plated stainless steel bracelets are usually produced through a multi-stage surface-treatment process, rather than simply applying ordinary gold paint. The most common high-quality method is PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition), often combined with polishing and surface preparation.

Typical factory process

1. Stainless steel forming

  • The factory starts with stainless steel, commonly 304 or 316L.
  • Sheet, tube, or wire is cut, stamped, forged, cast, or CNC-machined depending on the bracelet design.
  • Individual links, clasps, decorative components, etc. are produced.

2. Welding / assembly

  • Components are welded or mechanically assembled.
  • For chain bracelets, individual links may be assembled before or after certain finishing operations depending on the construction.

3. Grinding and polishing
This is extremely important because the gold coating does not hide poor surface preparation.

Typical stages include:

  • Rough grinding
  • Fine grinding
  • Buffing/polishing
  • Removing scratches and burrs
  • Creating mirror, satin, brushed, or other requested finishes

For a high-end bracelet, the steel surface should already look excellent before plating.

4. Ultrasonic cleaning and degreasing
The pieces are cleaned to remove:

  • Oil
  • Polishing compounds
  • Dust
  • Fingerprints
  • Other contaminants

They may go through ultrasonic cleaning, alkaline cleaning and rinsing.

5. Surface activation
The stainless-steel surface is treated so that the subsequent coating can bond properly.

This is particularly important because stainless steel naturally forms a chromium-oxide layer that makes adhesion more difficult.

6. PVD coating
The cleaned bracelets are placed inside a vacuum PVD chamber.

The basic process is:

Vacuum → plasma cleaning → metal vaporization → deposition onto bracelet

A target material such as titanium, zirconium, or other coating material is vaporized in the chamber. The resulting particles react with process gases and deposit onto the stainless-steel surface.

For gold-colored jewelry, manufacturers can produce shades such as:

  • Yellow gold
  • Light gold
  • Rose gold
  • Champagne gold
  • Black
  • Gunmetal

The exact appearance depends on the coating system, materials, process parameters and final surface finish.

7. Optional protective coating
Some manufacturers add a transparent protective layer or use a multilayer coating system to improve resistance to scratching, corrosion and wear.

8. Final assembly
After coating, components such as:

  • Clasps
  • Springs
  • Pins
  • Charms
  • Stones
  • Logo plates

may be assembled.

9. Quality inspection
Factories normally check:

  • Color consistency
  • Coating adhesion
  • Scratches
  • Surface defects
  • Plating/coating thickness
  • Clasp operation

  • Polish quality

If you’re evaluating a Chinese factory, I would not judge it simply by whether it says “PVD plating available.”

A genuine manufacturer should be able to explain and demonstrate:

  1. What grade of stainless steel they use — e.g. 304/316L.
  2. Where polishing is performed.
  3. Whether PVD equipment is owned by the factory or outsourced.
  4. What PVD system/coating technology they use.
  5. How they control gold color consistency between batches.
  6. How they test coating adhesion and wear resistance.
  7. Whether they can show the actual production line and equipment.
  8. Whether they manufacture the bracelet components themselves or merely purchase finished products and sell them.

That last point is especially important when you’re trying to distinguish a real stainless-steel jewelry manufacturer from a trading company or online seller that outsources production.
